If the fuel pipe shut-off valve is not installed, the fuel in the overhead fuel tank will flow back when the fuel filter is replaced, which may cause a serious fire.

Install a fuel shutoff valve between the fuel filter and the fuel tank.

When the highest oil level in the fuel tank is flush with or higher than the return pipe in the cylinder head, a check valve should be installed in the return pipe. When installing the check valve, the fuel flow direction arrow on the check valve should point to the fuel tank.

Static injection timing

The static timing measurement value refers to the remaining injection stroke of the injector camshaft cam when the piston is located 5.161 mm [0.2032-in] or 17.5 degrees before the top dead center (TDC) of the compression stroke.

The engine nameplate is marked with a static timing code. The codes are listed as wedge angles and are used to set the injector camshaft.

Technical specifications can be found in the Control Part Catalog (CPL). For ISX, QSX static timing values, use the following steps. Refer to steps 850-029 in Section V.

Advance timing (1) means that fuel is injected into the cylinder earlier during the compression stroke. Delay timing (2) refers to the injection of fuel into the cylinder near the top dead center.

Cummins ISX or QSX15 diesel engine injector camshaft cam stroke determines the relationship between injection timing and piston position.

The smaller the remaining value of the cam stroke of the injector camshaft, the greater the timing advance (1) or the faster the timing.

Cummins ISX or QSX15 diesel engine injector camshaft cam stroke remaining value is larger, indicating a greater degree of timing delay (2) or slower timing.

Cummins ISX or QSX15 diesel engine injection timing advances beyond the engine's nominal timing value can cause engine and / or aftertreatment system damage.

The change of the injection timing is achieved by advancing or retarding the movement of the injector camshaft cam relative to the position of the piston.

The injection timing is changed by using different wedges to change the orientation of the camshaft cam with respect to the injector rocker arm.

Cummins ISX or QSX15 diesel engine setup

The fuel injection timing is a measure for determining the correlation between the cam stroke and the piston stroke of the remaining injector camshafts. Fuel injection timing tools are required (part numbers 3824942 and 2892426).

Remove the oil filler pipe fitting from the lower gear chamber cover. Refer to steps 007-065 in section 7.

Insert a 19mm 3/4 inch ratchet wrench and extension rod into the air compressor drive.

Remove the rocker chamber cover. Refer to step 003-011 in Section 3.

Remove only the front injector and valve rocker assembly. Refer to steps 003-009 in section 3.

Remove the injector of the No. 3 cylinder. Refer to steps 006-026 in section 6

Note: If fuel or coolant enters the No. 3 cylinder, it must be drained to continue operation.

Note: The injector timing tool (part number 3829982) cannot be installed without removing the front valve and the injector rocker. If it is still not complete, remove the front valve and injector rocker assembly. Refer to steps 003-009 in section 3.

Install the ISX injector hole adapter (part number 3163304) in the repair tool assembly (part number 2892426) into the injector hole in the cylinder head of the No. 3 cylinder.

Note: When measuring the fuel injection timing on ISX or QSX engines, the part on the maintenance tool (part number 3824942) used to measure the stroke of the push tube will not be used.

Use only the screws provided in the repair tool (part number 2892426) to install the piston stroke portion of the injector timing tool (part number 3824942) into the No. 3 cylinder.

Position the maintenance tool so that the tool is aligned with the crankshaft axis, and the tool part used to fix the push tube stroke gauge extends out of the No. 4 cylinder.

Note: Improper tightening of this screw will cause measurement errors. Tighten the screws with a 13mm rotating sleeve. After tightening the screws, check to make sure that the piston plunger rod can move up and down freely. If the piston plunger rod cannot move freely, the free stroke must be obtained by adjusting the tool.

Tighten the screws.

Torque: 47n.m [35ft-lb]

Cummins ISX or QSX15 diesel engine measurement

Turn the engine clockwise (viewed from the front of the engine) until the mark B on the engine shock absorber aligns with the mark on the lower gear chamber cover, and the intake and exhaust valves on cylinder 4 are closed.

The rocker arm on the No. 4 cylinder must be released. If this is not the case, turn the engine 360 degrees and recheck the rocker arm to ensure that the intake and exhaust valves on cylinder 4 are closed. When the rocker is released, both valves are closed.

Install the piston stroke dial indicator (1) and adapter (2) to the maintenance tool installed in the No. 3 cylinder.

The adapter must touch the tool and the dial indicator is facing the operator. Tighten the thumbscrew.

The dial indicator must also be fully seated in the adapter. Tighten the thumbscrew.

Use the following steps to locate the engine TDC on the No. 3 cylinder.

Turn the engine clockwise until the piston plunger rod reaches the full upward stroke position.

Watch the movement of the dial indicator while turning the engine counterclockwise and clockwise.

Turn the engine clockwise until the hand movement stops.

Zero the dial indicator by adjusting the outer ring and locking it in place. Repeat this step multiple times to ensure the accuracy of the TDC.

Note: Be sure to set the “0” (zero) point of the dial indicator to TDC by using the crankshaft that has just turned in normal steering (clockwise) to reduce any timing error caused by the backlash of the gear.

Turn the engine counterclockwise to a position 6.35mm [0.250in] in front of the top dead center (BTDC). The large pointer on the dial indicator will rotate 2-1 / 2 turns and will move counterclockwise.

Note: The piston must be positioned to 5.161mm [0.2032in] BTDC to eliminate timing measurement errors.

Turn the engine clockwise until the dial indicator reads 5.161mm [0.2032in] BTDC. The dial indicator hand will move clockwise.

Note: This step must be performed to avoid measurement errors.

Loosen the No. 4 cylinder injector adjustment screw lock nut and fully retract the adjustment screw so that there is no load on the injector connecting rod. The injector rocker must swing freely back and forth.

Tighten the injector adjustment screw until it is just enough that the injector rocker no longer continues to swing.

Tighten the adjustment screw an additional turn (360 degrees). Tighten the lock nut by hand while making sure that the adjustment screw does not turn.

Tighten the adjusting screw lock nut.

Torque: 47n.m [35ft-lb]

Install the Cummins ISX or QSX15 diesel engine fuel injection dial indicator bracket (part number 2892427) to the maintenance tool installed in the No. 3 cylinder. The bracket must extend out of No. 4 cylinder.

Tighten the bracket holder by hand.

Assemble the dial gauge probe to the fuel injection stroke dial gauge.

Install the Cummins ISX or QSX15 diesel engine injection stroke dial gauge and adapter on the bracket (part number 2892427). The adapter must be seated 9.5mm [0.375in] above the bracket.

Tighten the thumbscrew.

The dial indicator must be oriented towards the operator.

Note: The spring seat on some injectors has a step for seating the measurement probe, so special care should be taken to prevent the probe from slipping during the injection measurement step. If the probe slips, timing errors will occur.

The measuring probe must have the correct orientation so that it contacts the spring seat on the injector as close to the centerline of the crankshaft as possible. Take special care to ensure that the probe does not touch the injector rocker arm or jumper plate. The probe must be positioned to the centerline of the crankshaft to avoid measurement errors. Use a 6.35mm [1 / 4in] wrench to manually tighten the probe lock nut. Note: Do not observe the piston stroke indicator. At this point in this step, dial indicator movement is no longer required.

While rotating the engine clockwise, observe the large pointer on the fuel injection stroke dial gauge of No. 4 cylinder until the pointer stops moving. Note that the hands will move counterclockwise.

When the pointer stops moving, record the fuel injection stroke dial indicator. Watch closely how many revolutions the dial indicator moves. Each full circle is 2.54mm [0.100in].

Note: Read the fuel injection stroke dial gauge from "0" (zero) counterclockwise. The total stroke is the injection timing value.

Compare the fuel injection stroke dial gauge reading with the engine CPL specifications listed in the Important Parts List (CPL). For ISX, QSX static timing wedge values, use the following steps. Refer to steps 850-029 in Section V.

This table is also found by entering the engine serial number (ESN) into QuickService ™ Online and selecting the Warranty tab. Select EngineDataplate under the Warranty tab. Clicking on the engine CPL number on the engine nameplate screen will take you to the CriticalPartsList screen. Select the link titled ISXQSXStaticTimingWedge. Find the engine CPL in the table where you are operating the engine. Record the nominal injection timing of the correct CPL. Compare the nominal CPL value with the injection timing value just measured on the engine. Go to the next step. If the injection timing does not meet the specified limits, check as follows: Is the timing tool installed correctly?

 Is the dial indicator adjusted correctly?

 Is the crankshaft adjusted in the correct direction and timing?

If these steps have been confirmed to be correct and the engine is out of timing, continue to the next step to determine if the injection timing is delayed or advanced.

If the dial indicator reads above the nominal technical specification, the timing is delayed.

If the dial indicator reading is below the nominal technical specification, the timing is advanced.

Note: The injection timing can be modified using different wedges provided in the repair tool (part number 2892426). Each 1 / 4-degree wedge will change the timing by approximately 0.1016mm [0.004in].

4.25 degree wedge-0.1016mm ahead of time [0.004in]

 4.50 degree wedge-0.2032mm ahead of time [0.008in]

 4.75 degree wedge-0.3048mm in advance [0.012in]

Select the appropriate wedge and perform basic engine timing steps. Refer to steps 001-088 in section 1. Use the crankpin and selected wedges to modify the injection timing so that it meets technical specifications. After the basic engine timing is completed, repeat this step and re-measure the injection timing to ensure that the injection timing now meets the technical specifications.

Update the engine nameplate to reflect the degree of wedge used to obtain the nominal engine timing.

Remove the injection timing tool and injector hole adapter.

Install the No. 3 cylinder injector with a new O-ring. Refer to steps 006-026 in section 6.

Install the valve jumper pressure plate.

Install the rocker arm assembly. Refer to steps 003-009 in section 3.

Adjust the valves and injectors. Refer to steps 003-004 in section 3.

Install the rocker chamber cover. Refer to step 003-011 in Section 3.

Remove the turning gear and install the oil filler pipe. Refer to steps 007-065 in section 7.
