Structure and maintenance of cylinder head and cylinder gasket

The function of the cylinder head is to seal the upper part of the cylinder and form a combustion chamber with the top of the piston. The shape of the combustion chamber has a great influence on the performance of the engine. Most gasoline engines use wedge-shaped combustion chambers, basin-shaped combustion chambers, and hemispherical combustion chambers. In order to facilitate heat dissipation, a water jacket is also made on the cylinder head, and a lubricating oil channel is also made for lubricating the parts of the gas distribution mechanism. The cylinder head of the overhead valve is also provided with an intake and exhaust passage that cooperates with the intake and exhaust pipes to complete the engine intake and exhaust work.

Common faults in cylinder heads are cracks and deformation. Cracks often occur between the intake valve seat and the exhaust valve seat. Excessive fitting of the valve seat or improper mounting process often causes fracture. The cylinder head should be replaced after the fracture. Deformation of the cylinder head will affect the tightness of the cylinder head, and it should be repaired.

1) Check the cylinder head for cracks. Use the dye penetration method to check the combustion chamber, air inlet, exhaust port, the surface of the cylinder head and the top of the cylinder head for cracks. If there are cracks, replace the cylinder head.

2) The unevenness of the cylinder head should be tested in 6 different directions with a precision ruler and thickness gauge. The maximum warpage of the lower surface of the cylinder head is 0.05 mm or less, and the use limit is 0.20 mm.

3) If the inspection results do not meet the above requirements, the cylinder head should be replaced or the cylinder head should be ground with a flat grinder, but the amount of grinding should not be excessive. The minimum thickness of the cylinder head of an Audi car is 132.75mm.
