Cummins diesel engine piston ring maintenance
1. Cummins piston ring is a wearing part of the engine. The main forms of damage are: excessive wear, breaking, adhesion and loss of elasticity.
2. Cummins piston ring wear
Parts: the outer surface of the ring and the upper and lower end faces.
Causes: Mostly due to improper management: poor running-in, overload operation, insufficient or poor quality lubricants, poor quality fuel, poor combustion and insufficient cooling. Uneven wear occurs. The first ring wears the most.
Standard: Wear rate is 0.1 ~ 0.5mm / kh, and piston ring life can reach 8000 ~ 10000h.
1) End gap detection
End clearance: The size of the opening when the piston ring is in working condition. It is the thermal expansion gap when the piston ring works. Prevent heat from getting stuck.
Use a feeler gauge to measure the end clearance of each Dow Cummins piston ring. Compare the measured end gap value with the specification or standard. When the limit value is exceeded, the piston ring should be replaced with a new one.
Backlash: The clearance between the ring and the upper end face of the ring groove when the piston ring is in close contact with the lower end face of the ring groove.
3) Measurement of radial thickness
Radial thickness is also a parameter for measuring the wear of the piston ring, because the wear of the outer surface of the piston ring reduces its radial thickness, which can be measured with an outside micrometer. According to the instructions, when the radial thickness of the piston ring is less than a certain value, replace the piston ring with a new one.
4. Cummins piston ring sticking
Form: Atomic and intermolecular adhesion (adhesive wear), mechanical seizure (oil and carbon deposits, groove deformation).
Reason: Structure (too small space, too little elasticity, reverse wiper ring installation), management (poor combustion, poor cooling, too much oil)
Consequences: Change in elasticity → Decrease in tightness → Broken ring → Pull cylinder
The method to prevent the Cummins piston ring from sticking: 1) to prevent the cylinder from overheating, and 2) to prevent too much lubricating oil, the piston ring grooves of large two-stroke diesel engines are easily deformed and the rings are stuck in the grooves.
Can strengthen the piston cooling and appropriately increase the plane clearance to prevent ring jamming.
5. Cummins piston ring elasticity check
Elastic force: refers to the radial force acting on the ring when the end gap of the piston ring reaches a specified value.
Function: Generate back pressure to ensure sealing.
Impact: Excessive: Increased wear. Too small: poor sealing and fast fuel consumption.

6, Cummins piston ring leakage test
The light leakage test aims to detect the degree of contact and seal between the outer surface of the ring and the cylinder wall. The purpose is to avoid the leakage of light through the contact area between the ambassador's piston ring and the cylinder.
Technical requirements for light leakage of piston rings:
1) There should be no light leakage within 30 ° of the piston ring port;
2) There should be no more than two light leaks on the same piston ring, and the center angle corresponding to the arc length of each light leakage should not exceed 25 °, and the sum of the center angles corresponding to the light leakage arc lengths on the same ring should not exceed 45 °
7, replacement Cummins piston ring technology
(1) Inspection before assembly:
A: Appearance and specification inspection: remove oil and rust, and check for cracks, trachoma and other defects.
B: Measurement of lap gap and plane gap: The lap gap is small, and the lap of the file ring is small; the plane clearance is small, and the upper end of the file ring is not to be repaired.
C: Depth of the ring groove and the radial thickness of the ring: The depth of the ring groove is required to be 0.5 ~ 1.0mm larger than the radial thickness of the ring; if the radial thickness is large, the inner circular surface of the file ring can be repaired.
