The Cummins series starter is a DC motor with an electromagnetic switch and a one-way clutch. It is a short-time working system. It is powered by a battery and is used to start a diesel engine. The starter structure is a two-wire system.

Cummins start motor use conditions
A. The size of the battery capacity will directly affect the service life of the starter. The smaller the battery capacity, the larger the internal resistance and the larger the internal voltage drop. Therefore, the current supplied to the starter is small, which reduces the power of the starter. A 8.1Kw power starter requires a battery capacity of ≥180Ah and a sufficient battery power.
B. The surrounding ambient temperature affects the starting power by affecting the internal resistance of the battery. When the temperature decreases, the internal resistance of the battery increases. When the high current is discharged, the battery will produce a sharp drop in terminal voltage, so the power of the starter will be significantly reduced. Therefore, if a preheating device and thermal insulation measures can be adopted in winter, the starting power can be appropriately increased and the starting performance can be improved.
C. The separation of starter and flywheel ring gear must be automatic. Because the transmission ratio between the starter and the crankshaft is very large, if the starter cannot be separated in time, the starter will be reversed by the engine, causing the armature coil to be damaged due to the high speed and scattering under the action of centrifugal force.
1. Check the mating surface of the engine and the starter. There must be no rust. The end face of the pinion of the starter is about 3-5mm from the flywheel ring gear.
2. The starter should be firmly installed on the engine without deflection.
3. The starter control circuit, the connecting wire cross section between the battery and the large wiring screw of the electromagnetic switch is 50mm2, and the connecting wire connecting the electromagnetic switch and the starting relay is not less than 2.5mm2. The length of the wire should be as short as possible, depending on the length of the wire. The section can be increased or decreased as appropriate. The battery positive pole is connected to the electromagnetic switch with a long bolt and must be tightened. The current capacity of the starting relay must be greater than 80A.
4. Check whether the battery is fully charged.
5. Switch on the starter relay control button, and the gear of the starter will mesh with the flywheel ring gear to make the engine rotate. Under normal circumstances, it can start once. If it fails to start at one time, you must wait for the gear to return to the original stationary position before starting the second time. (For engines with preheating devices, the engine should be warmed up before starting in winter when starting.)
6. The starting time of each starter should not exceed 5s, and the interval between two starts should not be less than 30S to prevent the motor from overheating. In winter, do not drag the supercharger with the starter for a long time, otherwise the starter will overheat and cause damage.
7. If the engine cannot be started several times in a row, check the engine, starter, battery and wiring.
8. When the engine starts, release the button immediately to return the gear to its original position. For rear-mounted engines, note that continuous start is not allowed until the flywheel has stopped.
9. During the starting process, slowly increase the throttle to prevent the rotor from flying away after the motor starts running at super high speed without the start switch returning, and the whole machine will be damaged.
10. Before replacing the starter, check whether the battery has run out of power.
11. Before replacing the starter, check whether there are other faults on the vehicle wiring.
12. Before replacing the starter, check whether the key switch, intermediate relay, and magnetic switch are sintered. If sintering is found, replace these parts before replacing the starter to avoid repeated damage to the starter.
Cummins Air Motor Startup System Maintenance and Repair:
